Little Willy wants you to come to his potato farm to help him get ready for the race. Can you help little Willy win the race and save his grandfather’s farm by beating the legendary Stone Fox?
The Task
You’re parents are a little worried about you going to Wyoming all by yourself so they decided to make a deal with you. The deal is, you’ll have to become an expert on the state of Wyoming, sled dogs, racing, potatoes, and much more before you can join Little Willy on grandfather’s potato farm in Wyoming, You will prove you are an expert by creating a PowerPoint presentation. Your presentation should include a slide from each task below. Each slide must contain three facts that you learned from each task, as well as a symbolic picture. The Process
Task 1: In the book Stone Fox, the setting is the state of Wyoming. Planning a trip is a lot of hard work and you must do it carefully. Go to the Wyoming4kids site and read their Wyoming Travel tips. Remember to pay close attention because you will need at least three facts and a picture for your presentation. Task 2: There is a lot of fascinating wildlife in Wyoming. Become an expert by reading all about Wyoming! Read the article a few times,that way you will become an expert on all of the wildlife of Wyoming. When creating your slide, you will need one mammal, one bird, and one amphibian common to Wyoming that you found while reading. Task 3: Now that you are a Wyoming expert, you need to learn a little more about what little Willy does on grandfather’s farm. Grandfather has gotten sick and Little Willy has to take care of the potato farm all by himself. You need to watch this video to learn more about potatoes so you can help once you arrive. The video is from England, so when they say chips they mean French fries! After watching the video, click on the other four links to heighten your expertise in potatoes. Task 4: You know the reason Grandpa is depressed and can’t talk or get out of bed is because he hasn’t been paying his taxes and the state of Wyoming wants to take his farm away. Go to the About Taxes to learn about taxes. Find three good facts about taxes to include on a slide. Task 5: In order to pay the taxes, Little Willy must enter the National Sled Dog Race and win the grand prize of $500 dollars. Willy’s dog, Searchlight, loves to pull Little Willy on the sled. Watch these videos to see what it takes to raise sled dogs and what makes a good sled dog. You will need to find three facts about sled dogs for one of your slides. Task 6: The greatest sled dog race of all is the Iditarod. The Iditarod is a grueling adventure that covers over 1,000 miles of the Alaskan wilderness. Explore the Scholastic Iditarod Website. When you think you are an expert, click the quiz button to take the Scholastic quiz. If you scored 7 out of 10 or higher, you are ready to move on. Find three facts about the Iditarod that pertain to Stone Fox. Task 7: The biggest threat to Little Willy winning the big race is the man they call Stone Fox. Stone Fox is a member of the Shoshone tribe. Click the Shoshone tribe link to learn more about his people. Find three facts about the Shoshone tribe for your slide.
